The Youth Symphony Orchestra is the advanced orchestra in the Santa Fe Youth Symphony Association program. Fifty accomplished musicians between the ages of fourteen and nineteen comprise the Youth Symphony Orchestra (YSO), conducted by Benjamin Klemme. These students enroll for the full season, attend a two-day music retreat at Glorieta Conference Center each fall as well as a two-day spring retreat, perform two free public concerts, and an out-of-town concert. The season is September through May and has two semesters with concerts in December and May.
Requirements for Participation
Auditions for this orchestra are held each year in May. Additional auditions will take place in September and January for any open positions. The YSO is open to advanced-level music students who are currently taking private lessons on their instrument and/or are participating daily in their school band/orchestra program. Some exceptions may be made for middle school students who are not yet fourteen but possess the necessary skills to play in the YSO. A letter from the private teacher and an interview with the conductor are also required in these special cases. Acceptance is at the discretion of the conductor.
