JAZZ ENSEMBLES
Jazz Ensembles I and II
The SFYSA is pleased to offer two Jazz Ensembles. According to a nationwide survey by the American Symphony League, the SFYSA is the only Youth Symphony organization offering a jazz program! Jazz Ensemble I is an advanced group, Jazz Ensemble II is an intermediate group. Both are directed by David Parlato. The ensembles are open to young musicians who play keyboard, bass (acoustic or electric), lead guitar, trumpet, trombone, saxophone (tenor, alto, soprano, or baritone), or drum set and are between the ages of ten and eighteen. Saxophone players will be encouraged to double on flute and clarinet.
Requirements for Participation
Students must be presently taking private lessons and/or participate daily in their school band program. They also need to have at least 2 years playing experience, with some experience playing jazz.
Placement auditions are held before the first rehearsal of each season. Each student is required to:
- play the required pieces (from the audition packet)
- play a chromatic scale the full range of the instrument,
- sight read and improvise on a short piece selected by the director.
Audition packets will be available upon registration.
Rehearsal Time and Location
Jazz II ( The Charlie Parker Ensemble) rehearses Monday evenings from 5:15- 6:45 at the Santa Fe High School Band Rooms, Jazz I (The Miles Davis Ensemble) rehearses Mondays 7:00-8:30, same location.
Tuition
The tuition is $300 per season, payable in two installments. Students who drop out before the third rehearsal will receive a full refund. Any students applying for Financial Aid must pay $20.00 at the time of registration and turn in a completed Financial Aid application form by September 30th to be considered for Financial Aid.
A late fee of $25.00 will be charged for any account that is 30 days past due. Attendance Policy
