SFYSA Orchestra and Jazz programs require all students, new and returning, to audition every year. (Auditions are not required for Mariachi or Elementary Strings.) This policy encourages students to make progress during the season, enables students to become familiar and comfortable with the audition process itself, and gives students frequent opportunity to be placed into the appropriate ensemble.
All auditions take place at the SFYSA Office (1604 Agua Fria St., 87505), unless otherwise advertised. Plan on arriving 15 to 30 minutes beforehand to get warmed-up without feeling rushed. The audition itself lasts about 5 to 10 minutes. Students perform their audition in front of 2 to 4 judges. Family and friends are not permitted in the audition space. There is a $10 fee per yearly audition. SFYSA offers auditions at the beginning of each semester (August and January), to accommodate returning and new students.
Please visit the “Programs” page for a brief description of each Orchestra and Jazz ensemble.
The next round of auditions will be held on:
Saturday, January 4, 2013
To schedule an audition, please contact the SFYSA Office.

Students are judged based on the quality of their rhythm, tempo choice, intonation, pitch accuracy, tone, expressive elements, technique, and scale fluency. Factors that determine a student’s placement include the outcome of the audition, the orchestra in which the student is currently enrolled (if applicable), and the student’s age.
